Black Isle Show Success August 2014
North Country Cheviot sheep certainly made their presence at the Black Isle Show, winning not only the coveted inter-breed sheep trophy but also the best in Ross-shire honours – with two different sheep.
The champion of champions prize was taken by Roderick (Rocket) Runciman’s home-bred one-crop ewe from Allanshaws, Galashiels, Allanshaws Nessie.
The breed, which was staging it’s National Show for both the park and hill types with a total 270 Cheviot entries, also boosted the sheep entry to a record breaking 1100 head.
It was the park-type that ruled supreme, though, with Roderick (Rocket) Runciman’s home-bred one-crop ewe from Allanshaws, Galashiels, lifting the overall championship.
“I must first congratulate the North Country Cheviot breeders as it was extremely difficult task splitting the two types to begin with,” said Ian Thomson, the inter-breed sheep judge, from Caberston, Walkerburn.
“I must also congratulate Roderick, as his park-type Cheviot was the brightest sheep of all the champions forward and she had beautiful hair and a body to follow,” added Mr Thomson, who later selected the Charollais champion as his choice of reserve overall.
Star of the show was Allanshaws Nessie, a daughter of Philiphaugh Tevez, out of a home-bred ewe. No stranger to the limelight, this classy female on her first outing of the year, stood reserve female at the Highland and first in her class at Kelso, last year.

GLORIOUS WEATHER throughout the duration of the four days at Ingliston, plus that all important feel-good factor, ensured this year’s Highland was a memorable event for most but it will go down in history as the best yet for North Country Cheviot breeder, Roderick Runciman, Allanshaws, when he won the coveted inter-breed sheep honours for the first time.

Roderick, or Rocket as he’s better known, wife Amanda, son Lewis (11) and daughter (9), had already been celebrating having won the breed championship for a record-breaking fourth consecutive time, but this was their first supreme following two reserve titles. And their show stopper was a true winner in every sense.
“I knew as soon as she was let away she was a champion,” said the overall judge, Angus Kennedy snr, from Broughton, Biggar.
“In my opinion, she was an easy winner as she is a very correct female with style, sparkle and beautiful hair. She had that look at me syndrome.” said Angus, who presented the reserve to the Texel and honorary mention to the Blackface.

Just pipped at the post in this extremely strong line-up which attracted more than 700 entries, was the sole sheep forward from another leading unit, Roderick (Rocket) Runciman’s North Country Cheviot flock from Allanshaws, Galashiels shown by son, Lewis (11).
